I run the Nauvoo Workshop for LDS Writers forum on Orson Scott Card's Nauvoo website

http://www.nauvoo.com/ubb2/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

and I'm having a hard time getting people to participate.

I was thinking it might help if I were to offer some writing challenges or writing exercises.

One of the rules, though, is that people can only post 13 lines of manuscript text (basically, the first page of a properly formatted short story manuscript). This is intended to protect their electronic publication rights as well as to keep the size of posts down. It's also a way for those giving feedback to say whether they'd turn the page (whether they wanted to keep reading) and explain why or why not.

Anyway, would anyone here be willing to suggest writing exercises or challenges I could offer that might work within that 13-line rule? I could offer challenges for whole stories, but I'm thinking that shorter challenges are more likely to get responses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kathleen,

One thing I enjoy doing once in awhile, is to take out a book I really like. I sit down and copy a couple of pages by hand. Then, I take another piece of paper and I start writing something original, free associating, and also by hand. Interesting things come out of my hand. You could have people do this, but then type up what they wrote while free associating.

I like that suggestion, Rex. I'll have to see how it would work on a writing workshop forum.

Thanks.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone else?

I like first paragraph and first line challenges where you have to write on a particular theme, topic, whatever and/or use a specific word or image. It doesn't necessarily create the greatest writing, but sometimes you end up with a concept that could then possibly be turned into a short story.
