I had the privilege of attending a reading at CONduit, the Salt Lake City science fiction convention, in which I heard a story by Eric James Stone that I felt deserves to be considered for awards. It is "The Ashes of His Fathers" and it was published in the May 2008 issue of ANALOG Science Fiction magazine, so it is eligible for next year's AML awards.
Because I am a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, I have recommended it for the Nebula award, but I'd like to see it considered for the AML Short Fiction award as well.
And I'd like to suggest that people who care about Mormon literature make suggestions about what they would like to see considered for the AML awards, too.
The way the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America do it, you have to be a full member to "recommend" works, and only works that receive 10 recommendations make it to the preliminary ballot where they can be voted on by all full members.
The AML awards are decided upon by the AML board, with the recommendations of award judges who have been asked to serve as judges by the AML board to judge in specific categories and present their recommendations in their categories.
The problem is that even if you are a judge of just one category, it's still hard to know what is out there, and to know what is worthy of consideration.
So I'd like to ask people to help the judges out by making suggestions of works that should be considered for the various AML awards.
If you would like your work (published in 2008 for this year's awards) to be considered, you are welcome to send a copy to AML Award Judges P O Box 970874 Orem UT 84097-0874
but if you are not the author of a work, you could still make suggestions, and post them here, or on the AML list (to subscribe to the AML list, send an email to <aml-list-subscribe@mormonletters.org> ).
As an AML board member, I would also like to know how people feel about the idea of having AML members "recommend" works for the AML awards with the idea in mind of creating a short list for the AML award judges.

. I assume if a work was published in an online magazine it would be preferable to publish it here rather than mailed?

Eric, I don't think this board is the place to publish work. It would be better to email something that has been published online to awards@mormonletters.org, and suggestions could be emailed there as well.

. Sorry--I was unclear. I didn't mean to republish the work itself, but just to publish the URL. But email makes more sense to me anyway in this context. In a slightly altered context, however, that might be a good idea for another forum here, rather like the new section for blog discussion, where we could publish links to the online work of LDS writers.

Wouldn't the Publication area, in the Announcements section: http://www.forums.mormonletters.org/yaf_topics15_Publications.aspxwork for online publication as well as printed publication?

. Probably, although something more explicit might be good. Another question is whether or not self-promotion is appropriate on these forums. From my observations, I think we've arrived collectively at yes for drama and eh for other media.

Eric, from my observations, you may be basing your observations on what statisticians call "self-selected" samples. As far as I can tell, the only people who have been willing to use these forums for self-promotion are drama people. No one has stopped or discouraged print media people from posting their own announcements here. We built it. They just haven't come.

. You are absolutely right. I just hate to be the first person to a party I wasn't even invited to. Maybe after the summer's over and I start getting paid again maybe I'll finally renew my membership. Then a lot of this guilt will go away.

I want to submit a couple of plays of mine that were performed this year. Do I send them to the above address, or is there an e-mail address which is better to send them to?
Upon the stage of a theater can be represented in character, evil and its consequences, good and its happy results and rewards; the weakness and the follies of man, the magnamity of virtue and the greatness of truth. The stage can be made to aid the pulpit in impressing upon the minds of a community an enlightened sense of a virtuous life, also a proper horror of the enormity of sin and a just dread of its consequences. The path of sin with its thorns and pitfalls, its gins and snares can be revealed, and how to shun it (Discourses of Brigham Young, p.243; Bookcraft, 199

And I have both scripts and DVDs of the productions... which should I send in? Both?

. Kathleen--- Would you mind posting a list here of all the possible awards? I'm know about the list at http://mormonletters.org/Awards/Categories.aspx , but I don't know if all of those are still alive or if new ones will be starting this year, etc.

Mahonri, send them to Association for Mormon Letters Awards, c/o Neal W. Kramer, 1664 West 1320 North, Provo, Utah 84604, and go ahead and send both.
The deadline is 31 December 2008.

Eric,
I went to the AML website and looked at the awards for the last few years, and this is what we awarded:
Biography--2007, 2005 Children's Literature--2001 Criticism--2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2001 Drama--2007, 2006, 2003, 2002, 2001 Editing--2003 Film--2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002 Film Adaptation--2003, 2002 Historical Fiction--2003 Honorary Lifetime Membership--2002, 2001 In Memoriam--2002 Middle Grade Literature--2004 Novel--2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001 Personal Essay--2006 Picture Book--2002 Poetry--2005, 2004, 2002 Publishing--2003 Review--2001 Service to AML--2006 Short Fiction--2007, 2006, 2003, 2002 Smith-Pettit Foundation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Mormon Letters--2007, 2006, 2005 Special Award--2007, 2006, 2005, 2004 Young Adult Literature--2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001
As you can see, in some categories we give an award every year (and even additional, honorable mention awards). In other categories, we don't give awards every year. With those categories, it depends on whether or not we know about something that is especially award-worthy.
For the 2008 awards, we would like to suggestions in any of the above categories, and especially in those categories that we haven't given awards in for a year or so. For annual awards, the recipient must have been published or produced in 2007. For the less frequent awards, the recipient can have been published in the last two years (or however many yearrs since the last award in that category).
I hope this helps.
