A daughter of a friend is writing her senior thesis at UC Davis on Mormon Hymns. I thought the survey was interesting enough to fill out that I would share it with a group who might find these questions relevant to their own interests. Once you're done, send it to chorusgirl722/hotmail/com, exchanging the /s for appropriate punctuation, @ and ..

I don't know if she would want her name publicly available, so I'll leave it out, but this is the survey:

5. Are you a convert, or were you raised in the Church? If a convert, did you identify with any other faith before joining the Church?

Hymn Survey

1. What do you feel are appropriate sources for hymn music, and why? Consider some of these: popular music, folk music, secular classical music, world music, music by Mormon composers, Protestant hymns, evangelical worship music, Catholic (liturgical) music, non-Christian sacred music. Are any of these inappropriate sources for hymns, and why? Which do you feel is best-suited to hymns, and why?

2. What do you feel are appropriate sources for hymn texts, and why? Consider some of these: direct quotation from scripture, Mormon lay authors, poetry written by prophets or apostles of the Church, Protestant authors, evangelical authors, Catholic authors, Catholic liturgy, sacred poetry or scripture of non-Christian faiths. Are any of these inappropriate sources for hymns, and why? Which do you feel is best-suited to hymns, and why?

3. Which elements of the hymns affect you, emotionally and spiritually? Which are important to whether you like the hymn or not? Some elements to consider are words, music, and memories associated with the hymn.

4. What are your top ten favorite hymns? You can find the list of hymns included in the current edition of the hymnal at http://www.lds.org/cm/catalogsearchalpha/1,17929,4782-1-1,00.html. What do you like about them? What is your number one favorite?

5. What are your 5-10 least favorite hymns? Why do you dislike them?

6. Are there any hymns not in the hymnbook which you think should be included? Why do they deserve to be in it?

7. Consider the role(s) that hymns play in your life outside of Sacrament meeting. When do you sing them? Are they important?

8. What is the role of hymns in your approach to worship? How important are they? How do they make you feel?

9. Should hymns play a larger or smaller part in our worship services, or is their current role about right?
