I'm curious how many people in this forum maintain a blog--I know of a few, but I am sure there are many more. In fact, I would guess that, oh, 70% are bloggers.

Blogging is becoming, I would argue, a necessary part of the business of writing. Modern media requires giving lots and lots of stuff away in order to make money on the things we charge for--in the modern economy, there is no reason to buy sight-unseen; after all, we can see everything.

On the other hand, blogging is something Onan could totally have gotten into. It takes time and effort to put enough content on a blog to build and maintain a readership relationships--time and effort that could be going towards that new novel.

I'm just curious what opinions you all hold on the blogging issue.

No blog here. I spend enough time on forums! Don't need something else to keep me on the internet :) Actually, I've noticed that blogging has become the latest stay-at-home-mom-job phenomenon (aka the new Tupperware Party) through something called Pay Per Post. The bloggers bid for jobs to write ads that they put between their regular blog posts. There are all sorts of hoops to jump through before you see one penny but some diligent folks have made a nice little sum (which is the carrot for the rest of the bloggers!). It all sounds exhausting to me! I tried other mommy website content type gigs and finally decided that if I was going to paid next to nothing and nothing for writing then I'd rather write something I really enjoyed writing.

I have one but go at it rather half-heartedly. I didn't know about that little money-making thing. I can't believe how many people spend hours of their days networking with other bloggers. I try not to look at my stats or care about how many people are reading because otherwise it becomes a pressure to produce/entertain and thus a time-zapper. For me, it's a different dimension to journalling, a way to keep my fingers moving and court the muse without pressure, and a way to keep connected with my little community. I also enjoy the little surprises I get--the people I used to know who somehow find my blog, or the complete strangers who are connected by six degrees or so. It's a pleasant hobby but nothing I'd spend more than a few minutes a day on.
