This has been under discussion in other Mormon-tinged forums (and elsewhere), but solutions to the problems raised are more likely to be found here.

I have never been a big tv-watcher, but my wife talked me into watching the premier episode of Pushing Daisies and we haven't missed one since--even though we had to catch the Halloween episode online.

Anyway, a few episodes in appeared a character named Wilfred Woodruff. A startling name for the Mormon viewer to be sure. The next week sported a character named Lemuel--not a name that would normally catch my attention, but following on the heels of Wilfred Woodruff....

Then, in this week's episode, polygamists. Over on BCC, people have been calling the first wife's decor "Celestial Room chic" and the site of their marriages Salt Lake Templesque, but that requires some projection, perhaps.

What did not require projection is the wife who doesn't drink caffeine.

Now, none of these things, alone, means anything. But coming with the frequency that they do, it raises questions. The most common theory I've heard/read is that one of the writers is Mormon.

I don't agree. I think the writer guilty of injecting these Mormon references is neither presently nor formerly Mormon. To me, they seem like in-jokes from a guy who has lots of Mormon friends. But who can say?

Is creator Bryan Fuller Mormon? Do story editors Kath Lingenfelter, Dara Resnik Creasey, and Chad Gomez Creasey hang out at the Peet's across from my ward building? Is second assistant director Greg Hale one of those Hales?

Anybody got an in on this mystery?

I don't have the faintest idea whether any of the producers are Mormon. The surname Hale is certainly intriguing, given the prominence of various Hale family members in the arts and in theatre. What I can say is that Pushing Daisies is the best written, most remarkable, most consistently inventive and brilliant new show on television. I think there's essentially no way they can keep it going, and I think it's a great candidate to join Firefly and My So Called Life on the list of 'fantastic TV series that got canceled way too early because network execs are soul-less, brainless morons' (which they're not, but venting's SO satisfying when you've just lost something fabulous and wonderful). And I'm ahead of myself, because they--ah, that amorphous villainous they-- HAVEN't canceled Pushing Daisies, not at all. But I'm terrified that they're going to.

Other Mormon ideas on the show? Well, there's clearly some kind of afterlife, even if it only lasts one minute. And it's about Eternal Love conquering all. But most importantly, it's about attractive young people, deeply and passionately in love, and THEY CAN'T TOUCH. AT ALL. So great.

I agree that the show is brilliant and I love it dearly. And so far, its ratings are healthy. With the writers' strike on, marginal shows should be a little safer than they usually are. I just hope the hiatus doesn't slay their mojo, and that they can come back as on fire as they are right now.

Incidentally, I've learned that the effects studio that worked on the first episodes was all Mormon and that they suspect the writers were ribbing them.
